I spent some time this morning tracking down a font that would have been available in 1918 when this letter was written. (For the ‘Homing’ project). The nearest I’ve got is Akzidenz-Grotesk which was released by the Berthold Type Factory in 1896 and was widely used. It may not be exactly the font that is used here, but I wanted to find a font that existed at that time.
I’ve also been looking at using this ‘cenotaph’ typeface that is similar to the ones used on all the war graves and the Roll of Honour in Preston.
The house in the address of the convalescent home on the letter, ‘Broad Leys‘ still exists and is an Arts & Crafts house, designed by Charles FA Voysey in 1898.
