I’ve been looking at letters from soldiers in Lancashire Regiments who were posted into a variety of different places. But the battle of the Somme was particularly devastating for the 1st East Lancs, who were on the front line and on July 1st 1916 suffered huge losses. One set of letters ends on that day, so I’m using this are of the Somme as the focus for thinking about places that Preston men fought during WW1. Google maps that link current satellite images with trench maps have been useful in making comparisons.
