Using Radio Aporee to do initial tests for new work in Preston Flag Market, between the War Memorial and the Roll of Honour.

I’m working with Sam Thulin, and we used Radio Aporee to position some test sound files in Preston to see what it feels like to listen to a particular kind of content there. It was great to hear sentences from letters that were written 100 years ago out in the open.

The pace of walking and the time of listening are difficult to imagine unless you’re actually there, so this was a good test before I start editing the texts that we’ll use in the work. In the app, when you walk out of a sound sample and then back in again, it continues to play from where you left it, so you’re not continually listening to the same thing and the narratives feel more woven together across the square.
